A lot of nail salons already ring up on Square. So the real question is often not “Square or Hayven”, but “is Square Appointments enough for my front desk, or do I need something beside it?”
Square Appointments is booking inside Square’s POS and payments system, made for service businesses in general. Hayven is made only for nail salons. It runs beside your POS, Square included, and takes check-in, walk-in turns, online booking, texts and, if you add it, calls nobody picks up.
The quick verdict: a solo pro who is mostly booked ahead can do well with Square Appointments, and its Free plan is hard to beat for that. A salon where walk-ins fill half the day will feel the missing turn list, and that is where Hayven fits, with Square still at the register.
We make Hayven, so read our side with that in mind. Every fact about Square on this page comes from Square’s own pages, checked on the date in the table.

Where Square Appointments is the better pick
- A free plan with online booking, reminders and deposits.
- Square POS, payments and hardware in the same system.
- A waitlist (Plus and up) that lets staff message clients when a spot opens.
- A big, well-known company behind it.
Where is Hayven the better pick for a nail salon?
Walk-in turns. Square’s waitlist (Plus and up) lets clients join online, and staff add walk-ins and message clients when a spot opens. We found no turn rotation. In Hayven, check-ins, walk-ins and online bookings land on one Turns board. Hayven suggests the right tech and shows why, and your desk taps Start. Your turn rules decide the count: services under a price you pick can count 0 turns, and you choose how requested clients count. See the turn tracker.
Check-in at the door. Clients check in on your own iPad or a printed QR poster. If you skip both, they tap the check-in link in the text Hayven sends before the visit. Everyone waits in one line, longest wait first. No new hardware.
Booking made for nail salons. Square’s booking site works for any service business, with booking from Instagram, Facebook and a QR code. Hayven’s online booking lets clients pick the service, the add-ons, the tech and the time, with no account and no password. Every booking lands on a real tech’s column, and Turns knows about it right away.
Calls nobody picks up. We found no AI phone answering on Square’s pages. Hayven’s optional AI phone assistant takes the calls nobody can answer, or calls when you are closed. Your phones still ring first. It speaks English, books on your Hayven calendar and texts the client the confirmation.
Can I use Hayven and Square together?
Yes, and this is the setup we built Hayven for. Square POS keeps doing payments: your card readers, your merchant rates, your hardware. Hayven takes booking, check-in, the calendar, turns and texts.
Here is how one visit runs at an example salon, My Nail Spa:
- A client books a gel manicure online in Hayven, or walks in and checks in on the iPad.
- Hayven suggests the next tech on the Turns board. The desk taps Start.
- When the service is done, the desk taps Done in Hayven.
- Hayven shows a ticket with every service, tech and menu price. The desk pastes it into Square and rings it up as usual.
Hayven does not connect to Square, so step 4 is a copy and paste, not an automatic handoff. In return, Hayven doesn’t touch your payments. If you book through Square Appointments today, ask Square what changes on your plan when you stop using its booking. More on keeping your POS.
If you turn on no-show protection in Hayven, clients who book save a card, and a person at your desk decides whether to charge a no-show fee. It is never automatic, and fees go to your salon’s own Stripe account, not through Square.
How do the prices compare?
Square lists a Free plan for solo pros, with online booking, reminders and unlimited staff calendars. Its paid plans are Plus at $49/mo and Premium at $149/mo per location, each with a 30-day free trial.
Hayven does not publish a price. We’ll walk you through pricing on your demo, with your own menu and team size. The AI phone assistant and our marketing service are optional add-ons. If you keep Square POS, your Square payment setup stays as it is.
For a solo pro on a tight budget, Square’s Free plan is the honest answer.
Which one fits my salon?
| Your salon | Better fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Solo tech, mostly booked ahead | Square Appointments | Free plan for solo pros, with online booking and reminders |
| A team, few walk-ins | Either | Check whether Square’s waitlist (Plus and up) covers your day |
| A team, walk-ins fill much of the day | Hayven beside your POS | One Turns board for walk-ins and bookings |
| Want payments and booking in one system | Square Appointments | Square POS, payments and hardware built in |
How do I add Hayven if I’m on Square today?
- Keep Square POS for checkout. Ask Square what changes on your plan when its booking is no longer in use.
- Book a demo with your real menu. We’ll walk through a salon day like yours and show the price for your team size.
- We set it up with you. Your techs, services and turn rules go in before day one.
- Ask how your clients and future bookings move over from Square Appointments, and pick a quiet day to switch your booking link.
- Put check-in at the door with your own iPad or a printed poster.
Try it on your busiest day. That is when a turn list earns its keep.
