Most “best of” lists for nail salons are really lists of booking software. A turn tracker is a different job, and very few tools do it. So this list is short on purpose. We looked at five tools and checked what each one says it does with walk-ins and appointments.
We make Hayven, so we rank ourselves first. We also tell you where that is the wrong pick for you.
What is a turn tracker, and why do nail salons need one?
A turn tracker answers one question all day: who gets the next client?
If one tech gets the quick, easy services and another waits, people notice. The desk ends up as referee. A paper sheet or a whiteboard works until the salon gets busy, and then it turns into arguments.
A turn tracker keeps count. It knows who is signed in, who is busy, who is next, and what each service counts for. The best ones also show their reasoning, so a tech can see why she was skipped.
What should you look for in a turn tracker?
Four things matter more than the rest.
- Turn rules that match your salon. Every salon counts turns a little differently. Some count a polish change as zero. Some count a requested tech differently. If the app has one fixed rule, you will fight it.
- Walk-ins and appointments on one list. This is the hard part. A booked client holds a tech’s time. If the turn app does not know about the calendar, your desk does the math by hand.
- Check-in. Clients should be able to join the line without the desk typing them in.
- Fairness the techs can see. If the rules are hidden, nobody trusts them.
The table above compares the five tools, with a source for every fact. Here is how we read it.
Which turn tracker is best for nail salons?
For one board that holds walk-ins, appointments and “Anyone” bookings, we rank Hayven first. For turns plus a full POS, Tilavon is the better pick, and we explain that below.
1. Hayven
On the Hayven turn tracker, check-ins, walk-ins and online bookings land on one board. Hayven suggests the right tech and shows why. Your desk checks it and taps Start.
Here is what we think matters most.
You set the turn rules. Your turn rules can be Simple or Advanced. You can give any service its own turn number, choose how a requested tech (the star) counts, and guard the line with a passcode.
It shows its reasoning. For each suggestion, Hayven checks, in order: signed in and taking clients, does every service on the ticket, whose turn it is, free right now, and done before her next client. If a tech has a booking soon, she is passed this time and keeps her place. It is not AI. It uses the same clear rules every time.
Walk-ins and appointments share a line. Check-in works on your own iPad, a printed QR poster, or a check-in text. Walk-ins and appointments wait in one line, longest wait first. Booked clients show “Ready” when their tech is free.
“Anyone” bookings follow the turn. When a client picks Anyone online, Hayven holds a real tech so the time is not double-booked. When the client starts, Turns offers the next tech in turn. Only Anyone bookings change. A client who picked a tech keeps her. There is more on how Anyone works online.
Hands and feet at the same time. A same-time booking can start now with one tech while a second tech joins a little later. That is a setting you turn on.
Techs can see the proof. When the desk starts a walk-in, Hayven saves who it suggested and who the desk picked. The Today report shows it for each tech. When a tech asks why she got fewer walk-ins, you open the report together.
What to know before you pick it. Hayven is not a POS and takes no payments. Clients pay at your POS, and Done on Turns closes the visit on the calendar. The app is in English, and the check-in kiosk speaks English and Spanish. Our team sets you up and helps you in English and Vietnamese. There is no public price. We’ll walk you through pricing on your demo.
2. Tilavon
Tilavon is a nail salon POS with booking, a walk-in turn queue, commissions, loyalty and an AI receptionist add-on. Its page says the turn queue rotates walk-ins among free techs, with rotation rules, skip, manual assign and a live queue screen.
That is a real turn tool, and it sits in the same system as your POS and card payments. It also publishes its plan prices, and the app, receipts and texts come in Vietnamese.
We rank it second because we did not find it described the way this list asks: walk-ins and booked clients on one board, with “Anyone” bookings handled by turn. It may do that. Ask for a demo and test it.
3. Smart Turn Tracker
Smart Turn Tracker is an iPad app for nail salon turn rotation and staff status. It has automatic turn rotation, turn tiles by service type, staff check-in and a daily dashboard.
It is free to download, and it does one job. If you only want to replace the paper sheet, that is a fair deal. The App Store page mentions a 14-day trial without saying what the terms are, and lists English only.
It lands third because it is a turn app on its own. Your calendar and your online bookings live somewhere else, so the desk still joins the dots.
4. Mangomint
Mangomint is salon and spa software with booking, POS, payments and client management. It includes a Virtual Waiting Room. We found no walk-in turn list or rotation described, and no nail-specific feature.
It is a solid system for salons and spas, and it publishes add-on prices. It just is not a turn tracker in the nail salon sense.
5. Square Appointments
Square Appointments is booking inside Square’s POS and payments system. We found no turn rotation. Its waitlist (Plus and up) lets clients join online, and staff add walk-ins themselves.
It has a free plan for solo pros, and a big company behind it. For a busy walk-in salon, a waitlist is not a turn board.
Who should pick something else?
Be honest with yourself about what you need.
- Pick Tilavon if you want turns, POS and card payments in one system, or you want the app itself in Vietnamese. It also publishes its plan prices. Hayven cannot match that. We are not a POS, and our app is in English.
- Pick Smart Turn Tracker if you want the simplest possible start. It is free to download and does turns only. If you only need a rotation, it may be all you need.
- Pick Mangomint or Square Appointments if you are mostly an appointment business. Neither one has a walk-in turn list that we found, but both have booking, POS and payments in the same system.
- Skip Hayven if you want to replace your POS. We say it plainly: keep your POS. We handle booking, check-in, the calendar and the turn tracker, and your POS keeps doing payments. Read more about working beside your POS.
Where does Hayven fall short?
Four gaps, stated plainly.
- It is not a POS. You still need one.
- It takes no payments. Clients pay at your POS.
- There is no public price. You get pricing on a demo.
- The app is in English. Support and setup are in English and Vietnamese.
How do you choose?
Start with how your salon really works.
If most of your day is walk-ins, you need a turn tracker that handles the walk-in rule well. If you mix walk-ins with bookings, pay attention to how the app treats a booked client when a walk-in comes in. That is where hand math creeps back.
Then check three things on any demo:
- Ask the tool to show you why it picked a tech. If it cannot, your techs will not trust it.
- Book a client for later, then check in a walk-in right now. See what happens to the tech who has the booking.
- Book a client as “Anyone” online and see who gets the visit.
If the tool handles those three well, it will handle your Saturday.
You can see how this works in Hayven’s turn tracker, or ask for a demo and we will run a salon day like yours. A busy afternoon, a booked client coming soon and a walk-in at the desk: that is the test to run on every tool on this list, ours included.
